📈 How to 3x your homepage conversion rates

Apollo’s current homepage perfectly demonstrates what I hear many startup founders complaining about, poor conversion and lead capture rates.

Before showing you how variable rewards and the endowment effect solve this...

Q: What's the #1 problem with Apollo's current homepage?

Take a minute to think about what's missing here. Got it? Scroll down...

There are multiple issues here.

But the main ones are (1) vague positioning and (2) zero compelling reason to sign up.

Apollo calls themselves an "AI outbound engine" which tells you absolutely nothing about what they actually do. Their subtitle mentions "find and research leads" but it's buried in a laundry list of features. Most importantly, when you see "Sign up for free," your brain immediately asks: "Free for what exactly?"

This creates massive psychological resistance:

  • "What am I actually getting for free?"

  • "Is this just going to be a useless trial that expires in 7 days?"

  • "AI outbound engine could mean anything"

The result? Users bounce because there's no clear, compelling reason to exchange their email for an unclear value proposition.

Q: So how could Apollo dramatically improve their homepage conversions?

Try to imagine a better approach. The solution is below...

They're missing variable rewards and personalized value.

Instead of generic "sign up for free," successful products like Robinhood create anticipation with variable rewards. Robinhood's famous "You could get up to $175 in free stock" drove massive signups because people intuitively believe they'll get closer to the maximum reward.

Robinhood’s Variable Rewards

What does this look like for Apollo?

Change #1: Clear Value Proposition Replace "Meet your AI outbound engine" with: "Sign up free, get up to 10,000 verified leads"

This immediately tells users what Apollo is best known for (leads) and creates curiosity about how many they'll actually receive. This variable reward mechanism is so powerful because people intuitively believe that they'll get a number of free leads near the higher end vs the lower end.

Change #2: Personalized Lead Preview Instead of asking for just an email, add two quick fields:

  • Target job title (e.g., "Marketing Director")

  • Target company type (e.g., "SaaS startups")

Then show: "Sign up to unlock up to 10,000 Marketing Directors at SaaS startups"

This means you build a set of leads that is personal and has real value to you. This is the endowment effect.

Change #3: Viral Coefficient Booster Currently, Apollo heavily prioritizes inviting teammates in their onboarding flow. The invite rates could be even further improved by giving a new user another "roll of the dice" with the option to earn up to 10,000 MORE verified leads by sharing with a teammate.

Apollo’s Current Invite Onboarding Screen

After signup, offer: "Invite a teammate to unlock up to 10,000 MORE verified leads"

This means users can get real value out of the product and hit their aha moment without needing to pay (driving strong product-led growth adoption) while simultaneously increasing your viral coefficient.

The results? This approach transforms a generic "try our AI tool" into "get thousands of leads for your exact use case." Users sign up because they can visualize the specific value they'll receive, not because they're curious about yet another AI platform.
